Advent time is feel-good time! The bakery is steaming, Christmas scents fill the home and it’s time for sensual get-togethers and enjoyment. This jam without sugar is a must. Although the sugar is missing, the plum jam bursts with a seductive mulled wine aroma. Once you’ve tried it, you won’t want to go without this mulled wine jam during Advent.
Advent jam without sugar

As we all know, Advent is a time for reflection and my favorite season. (I’m leaving out summer for now, because nothing beats the warm sunny months). The atmosphere during the Advent season is simply something special that I can never get enough of. The smell of cookies and roasted chestnuts hangs in the air and Christmas carols can be heard from afar. And the atmosphere at the Christmas market is simply indescribably beautiful. Finally, a little stop at the mulled wine stand – life couldn’t be more perfect.

These types of things mean advent for me, as well as cinnamon, gingerbread, cardamom, cloves, allspice, star anise, and vanilla. Those spices are an integral part of my kitchen and I wouldn`t want to miss them during that special time of the year. Mulled wine spice contains the majority of the spices I mentioned above. This is why I would go so far as to call these spice mixtures a fusion of all the flavors that link to the advent and Christmas time.

Jam without sugar

And that is exactly the reason why I decided to make a mulled wine-flavored chia jam this year. And do you know what`s the best about it? You can indulge in this jam without feeling bad. Because the jam is jellied by using chia seeds and not canning sugar, it`s completely sugar-free.

Of course, you can also give the jam as a gift, but it must be used up within 3-to 4 days. As the jam contains no sugar, there is no preservative effect. If you would like to give a longer-lasting product as a gift, there is also an alternative recipe with gelling sugar. And if you don’t like damsons, you can use cherries as an alternative.

Mulled wine jam without sugar

Ingredients (for 2 glasses):

  • 400g plums
  • 3 tsp mulled wine spice
  • 150ml red wine or water if you don’t drink alcohol
  • 5 tsp chia seeds, organic quality

-> if you prefer the long-lasting but not sugar-free version, leave out the chia seeds and add 400g of gelling sugar during the cooking process of the plums instead!

Preparation:

  1. preheat the oven to 200° Celsius
  2. place the jars you want to use in the oven for 10 minutes to sterilize them.
  3. first, bring red wine or water with mulled wine spice to the boil in a pan over low heat. cover the pan and leave to infuse for about 10 to 15 minutes so that the mulled wine flavor is intense enough.
  4. pour the mulled wine or mulled water through a sieve to remove the remaining spice
  5. place the plums in a pan with your mulled wine or mulled water and simmer over medium heat for about 5 minutes. if you use frozen plums like I do, it will take a little longer, about 10 to 15 minutes.
  6. puree the jam with a hand blender. if you like it chunkier, you can also simply mash the plums with a fork.
  7. add the chia seeds, stir well, and immediately pour the hot jam into the jars and seal. then turn the glasses upside down. I like to use these jars for my storage.

To be honest, this procedure is so simple that we hardly ever buy jam anymore, but usually make it ourselves. Not only is it much cheaper, but you also know exactly which ingredients are included. Try it out, it’s super easy and you can easily freeze what you have too much of. Ice cube bags into which you can pour the jam without sugar (when cold!) are very suitable.

Have a wonderful advent time and read you soon,

Sarah
