Sun-Dried Tomato Hummus

This blogpost also is available in German.

Besides guacamole humus is one of the best vegan dips ever! The traditional oriental speciality made of mashed chickpeas and tahini (sesame paste) is already super delicious if prepared in the classic way. But have you ever tried spicing things up by adding ingredients that actually wouldn‘t belong in there? Ok, if you are defender of authenticity you might close your eyes or just try to act out of character for once by trying out something new. By all means I can absolutely recommend you on experimenting with different hummus flavors. It‘s totally worth it!

At this very moment I am kind of addicted to my variation with sun-dried tomatoes, as it tastes like summer to me. And I strongly believe that we all need a little bit of summer feeling right now considering the freezing temperatures outside and the constant grey sky.

As usual the main ingredients are chickpeas despite the sun-dried tomatoes. Out of the blue I would claim that whatever variation of humus you‘re doing, the base of it will always be chickpeas. Furthermore I would like to mention that chickpeas are an outstanding protein source. The protein content is approximately 20%, or in other words, 100g of chickpeas contain 19g protein. This is almost the same amount you can find in meat. Or to emphasize more accurately: 100g beef contain 26g of protein and 100g chicken 27g. You can see it‘s almost the same. But on top of that chickpeas don‘t contain any cholesterol at all compared to meat. This is why I go out for a limb by saying chickpeas definitely win the race in this case. If you are living a vegan diet or don‘t consume meat for any other reason, chickpeas are a great alternative to supply your body with enough protein.

Ok, enough of me being a smart ass (?), are your taste buds ready for the ultimate summer kickoff? Some antipasti and a good glass of wine and you are already debauch in  „La Bella Vita“! Bring on the culinary journey, let‘s go to Italy!

Ingredients (ca. 350g humus):
